Abstracts for all presentation submissions will be published in the Symposium Program, provided they are received by the submission deadline of January 7th, 2014.

 

Section 1. Presentation guidelines (based on the ASME Oral Presentation Competition Guidelines)

Each presentation shall not exceed ten minutes, and is followed by a three minute “Question and Answer” (Q&A) period.

Each presentation must be delivered in English, and submitted in digital ppt or pptx format.

The presentation must address a technical, economic or environmental aspect of geospatial science related to the mission of ASPRS as “The Imaging & Geospatial Information Society.”

Judges will evaluate each presenter based on the criteria specified in Section 5. Judging and Scoring Criteria.  Emphasis is placed on the presenter’s capability to communicate orally, ability to respond effectively during the Q&A period, and overall quality of presentation. By submitting a presentation the presenter agrees to abide by the judges scoring discretion.

A competitor may utilize and document any available resource. All references must be cited using APA format The presentation, however, is an individual effort.

 

Film clips, if used, may not exceed one-minute total duration (i.e. a maximum of one minute of each student presentation may be used for video). Film clips may not be accompanied by any recorded sound. Film clips should be avoided when possible due to streaming issues encountered when streaming videos over virtual shared desktops. If a film clip is necessary, the clip must be run off the local desktop and not streamed from a website.

Good practice and courtesy suggests credit be given during the presentation for any outside help related to the reported project.

A written paper or manuscript is not required.

The length of each abstract must be a minimum of 200 words not to exceed 500 words.

 

Section 2. Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible to participate, each competitor must be a currently enrolled student (undergraduate or graduate) at the time of the symposium who:

a. is enrolled at a school within the ASPRS Florida Region; or

b. is a state of Florida resident who attends a school outside of the ASPRS Florida Region.

 

Section 3. Competition Entry

For this symposium, there is a limit of one (1) abstract submission per student. Selected abstracts submitted by the deadline will be printed in the program and published online prior to the Research Symposium.

 

Section 4. Conduct of the Competition

Each presentation shall be made by one presenter. The duration of each presentation is ten (10) minutes plus three (3) minutes for Q&A immediately thereafter.

 

Timekeeping will be conducted by the moderator. The presenter will receive chat warning messages at the nine (9) and ten (10) minute interval.

 

Section 5. Judging and Scoring Criteria

Each competitor will be judged by the ASPRS Florida Region Judging Panel. The presentations will be judged on six (6) categories: organization, delivery, visual aids, subject matter, handling questions, and conforming to time restraints.

 

ORGANIZATION (Max. 20 pts): Sequence of topics (logical and effective); introduction, bodyof talk, coherent conclusions.

o Is there any novel approach to the subject? Is there sufficient background information provided in order to introduce the audience to the subject? Are the facts developed in logical and continuous sequence? Is there a definite conclusion, and was it adequately based on the facts or data presented?

 

DELIVERY (Max. 20 pts): Poise, audibility, proper grammar, and time management

o Are the words distinctly pronounced and was proper volume used to be heard by all? Is proper English used, and is the vocabulary sufficient? Is the manner of delivery (conversation, memorized, read from manuscript) satisfactory? Is the presentation within the time limit of 10 minutes allowed?

 

VISUAL AIDS (Max. 20 pts): Appropriate to subject, legible, eye-appealing

o How effectively are the visual aids used? Are the visual aids eye-appealing?

o Are the visual aids appropriate?

 

SUBJECT MATTER (Max. 30 pts): Important questions addressed, appropriate methods used

o To what extent is the subject of interest to a technical audience? Is credit given for source of material or contribution by others? How much knowledge of subject was exhibited? Is work independent and original? Is the subject technical or general in nature?

 

HANDLING QUESTIONS (Max. 10 pts.): Questions made clear to audience; answers logical and appropriate.

o Is the presentation evoking spontaneous questions from the audience? Are the questions indicating the need for clarification of facts presented, or were they merely of the type seeking additional information? How readily and with what self-assurance did the speaker answer the questions? Are the answers indicating knowledge of the subject beyond that disclosed in the original presentation? Is the ability to think clearly demonstrated?

 

CONFORMING TO TIME RESTRAINTS (Max 8 penalty points; 1 pt for each 30 seconds overtime or 2 minutes under time).

 

First- and second-place competition winners will receive an awards certificate, complimentary ASPRS Student Memberships, and ASPRS Bucks good for purchasing books in the ASPRS Bookstore.  Winners will be announced at the end of the Symposium.
